LA QUINTA, CA, UNITED STATES, December 9, 2024 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The American Express® has received commitment from top-ranked Scottie Scheffler to compete in the 66th annual tournament, which will be held January 16th-19th, 2025 at PGA WEST’s Pete Dye Stadium Course (host course) and Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course, as well as La Quinta Country Club. Joining him in the field of 156 professional and amateur players is defending champion Nick Dunlap, who in 2024 became the first amateur in 33 years to win a PGA TOUR tournament.

"The American Express® is absolutely thrilled to welcome Scottie Scheffler one of the brightest stars in golf,” said tournament Executive Director Pat McCabe. “Having the top-ranked player competing in our event is a testament to its enduring appeal and prestige among players. We’re also incredibly excited to have Nick Dunlap returning as champion. His historic victory in 2024 captivated the golf world and added a new level of inspiration for fans. We look forward to watching him defend his title this January."

Scheffler returns to The American Express® for the fifth time and is currently the No. 1-ranked player in the Official World Golf Ranking, a position he has held for over 100 weeks. Scheffler is a two-time Masters champion, winning the tournament in both 2022 and 2024. He finished third in The American Express® in 2020 and 11th in 2023. The 2020 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year has 13 career wins, including seven last season, and earned a gold medal at the 2024 summer Olympics. Scheffler was named PGA TOUR Player of the Year in 2022 and 2023, becoming the first since Tiger Woods to earn the honors back-to-back.

With his victory at The American Express® in 2024, Dunlap became the first amateur in 33 years to win a PGA TOUR tournament. He was the first player in TOUR history to win as both an amateur and a professional in the same season. He earned his second career victory and his first as a professional at the Barracuda Championship.

Scheffler has been nominated for the Jack Nicklaus PGA TOUR Player of the Year Award, while Dunlap has been announced as a nominee for Arnold Palmer Rookie of the Year. The winners will be announced later this month.
