Francesco Molinari is the 2018 Hilton European Golfer of the Year.

The Italian had a phenomenal summer as he won the BMW PGA Championship, his first event on the PGA Tour at the Quicken Loans, the Open – and then sealed the winning point at the Ryder Cup as he won all five matches.

The 36-year-old claimed the Race to Dubai as European No.1 last month.

The London-based star, now up to world No.7, said: “It is an award that means a lot to me and is a nice way to end a very special year.

"Winning at Wentworth, in one of our biggest events, gave me a lot of confidence for the summer, but obviously
winning The Open at Carnoustie, becoming my country’s first Major champion, was incredible.

“To then go on to win the Race to Dubai and be part of that European Ryder Cup team in France was amazing.

"I’ll always look back on this season and be proud of what happened.”

Molinari was last week also nominated for the BBC's World Sports Star of the Year - previously named Overseas Sports Personality of the Year.

He is up against American gymnast Simone Biles, Ukranian boxer Oleksandr Usyk and Czech skier/snowboarder Ester Ledecka.
