It might seem strange to be complaining when Liverpool are top of the Premier League with four wins from as many matches but looking at how well-balanced we looked last season, we just don't seem quite right at the moment.

We took West Ham United apart on the opening day – and they remain bottom of the league without a point so far – but haven't really been impressive in any of our games.

It's a good sign that we're four out of four and winning ugly but there comes a time that we've got to start playing properly to the best of our ability.

On the one hand it's nice to get the points in a scrappy fashion when you're not playing well, but you also want to start hitting a bit of form with Tottenham away up next and showing what we can do like last season.

The front three haven't been hitting the heights of earlier in the year.

People talk about the possibility of a World Cup hangover but they've all been given or offered new contracts and sometimes that can have an affect on a player and you've got to question why it hasn't happened.

Sadio Mane is doing well but the other two lads, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are well off the pace compared to how high they have set the bar for themselves.

I don't know if they're just out of form and I'm not sure whether the players are sure themselves.

Salah was never going to get another 44 goals in a season – that can't happen two years on the bounce, his 2017/18 figures were ridiculous – but you'd like to think that he can still get another 30-35 goals as he's capable of doing that.

Maybe there's still something wrong with the injury from the Champions League final or what's happened off the pitch with Egypt is playing upon his mind but we need him firing on all cylinders.

He looks a bit deflated at the moment for some reason.

Mo shouldn't be lacking in confidence as he's already scored a couple of goals but he seems like he's got a weight on his shoulders.

We just want him back playing with a smile on his face and causing opposition teams problems.

After we all saw what he was capable of last season, cutting inside, now every time that he picks up the ball in the inside right position there are three players closing him down every time because he's such a threat.

They're like a swarm of bees around him but he's got to deal with that and that creates space around him because he's dragging players out of positions.

If we're going to keep pushing Manchester City over a prolonged period then they've got to start performing like they did last year.

I'm glad we're where we are at the top of the table but at some point along the way we've got to click into gear.

The little break for internationals might help us but you just don't know.

Our recent record at Wembley hasn't been too good and obviously we were well-beaten by Tottenham there last time out.

We're winning but unless we improve we won't get away with it at places like Tottenham.

If we perform like we did against Leicester and Crystal Palace there then they'll turn us over.

Gomez's best game - and he'll only get better alongside van Dijk

Joe Gomez produced what was probably his best performance for Liverpool to date at Leicester – certainly at centre-half – and that's the position we all knew he was going to grow into.

If he stays away from injury then he can form a really good partnership with Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren will be lucky to get back in the side.

Joe Gomez of Liverpool passes the ball under pressure

Gomez is young and he's got everything. Playing alongside van Dijk can only help him because the Dutchman is a leader who takes the pressure away with his talking and will develop Joe as a player.

When I was starting out up front, the first great player I played alongside was Billy Hamilton at Oxford United.

Billy was a big centre-forward who was more experienced than me – it was fantastic.

He was a Northern Ireland international who had previously been at Burnley and I learned so much from him.

Reds group was always going to be tough

Napoli's president has threatened to complain to UEFA over being drawn against Liverpool in the Champions League but coming out of the third pot in the seeds, whichever group we ended up in was always going to be a really tough one.

With all due respect to the other clubs in the third pot, Liverpool are much stronger.

I'm not sure how they work it out with some of these top seeds but it's going to be hard for Napoli, hard for Paris St Germain and for us too.

It's one we won't be fazed by – we were in the third pot last season and got to the final – but even though PSG are very strong they won't fancy coming to Anfield... on my 60 birthday I might add!

I wouldn't swap Robertson for any other left-back

I'm really pleased for Andy Robertson to be named the new Scotland captain and he deserves the honour.

It's great to captain your country and I'm absolutely delighted for him.

In my opinion, he and Marcos Alonso are the best two left-backs in the Premier League which shows the progress he's made over the past 12 months.

Alonso has scored a lot of goals for Chelsea but given what Andy does, I wouldn't swap him for anyone.

I'd just like to finish by saying I was playing my charity golf tournament in Portugal for the 16th year at the weekend in conjunction with Tomorrow magazine in the Algarve. We raised €15,000 for local kids in need throughout the Lagos areas and it was a privilege to help such a worthy cause.
