The world of professional golf is known for its camaraderie, but when it comes to the top spot, even the friendliest of rivals can become fierce competitors. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are no exception.
Prior to this week's Texas Children's Houston Open teeing off, Scheffler was asked about McIlroy's comments about trying to catch him at the PLAYERS Championship.
"I think when you're a competitive guy like Rory is, I think you're always looking for some source of motivation," Scheffler said.
"I think when you're a great player like that, you're always looking for sources of motivation, especially as you get a bit older. You know, he's been out here for a long time and I think sometimes it can get a bit redundant playing the same events over and over, and any source of motivation, I think you can have when you're such a great player I think is a good thing."
Despite being each other's biggest competitors, they have always maintained a respectful relationship. However, the quest for the World No. 1 position and Major titles can bring out the best – and the most competitive in both golfers.

At this year's PLAYERS Championship, the 4-time Major winner smashed Scheffler's bid for a three-peat at TPC Sawgrass. Interestingly, despite the competitive tension, McIlroy expressed admiration for Scheffler's game.
After winning the event at St. Patrick's Day, McIlroy was asked if he thought anyone would someday be able to match his 28 career wins on the PGA Tour.
"Scottie keeps having nine-win seasons, he's going to get there pretty quick. Sure, I'm sure there's – some guys have the ability to certainly get there."
However, McIlroy's admiration for Scheffler's skills was tempered by a hint of competitiveness. He added, "But all I can do is focus on myself and try to keep playing the best golf that I can."
It's clear that McIlroy is gunning to reclaim the World No. 1 position and is eager to dethrone Scheffler.
Scheffler and Rory are teeing off on Thursday at the Houston Open. It is a course than some pro's believe is the perfect tune-up for the Masters.
Incidentally, Scheffler shared those sentiments regarding Augusta National prior to teeing off this week.
McIlroy was accompanied by Maverick McNealy and Wyndham Clark during their first round of the Houston Open. Whereas the World No. 1 will be teeing up at 2:03 PM ET.
