MORTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The Champions Cup is one of the four major tournaments in professional disc golf, and it’s being hosted in central Illinois.

Northwood Park in Morton is the venue, with Tournament Director Nate Heinold calling the course one of the world’s most difficult due to the terrain and number of trees.

Some of the best men’s and women’s disc golf players in the world are featured, which Heinold said is “great exposure” for not just Morton but central Illinois as a whole.

“We have a lot of people that come from out of town year-round to play at Northwood Park because of the fact they see it covered and they want to come play,” he said.

Heinold added that the sport of disc golf is very similar to golf but joked that it’s “less expensive”. Instead of clubs, all you need is your hands to grip the disc and throw it. Instead of a hole in the ground, the goal is to throw the disc into a chain-link basket. The scoring system is basically the same as golf.

This is the first men’s major championship and the second women’s major championship of the year. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
