For the first time, professional golfers from the Fiji PGA will grace the golf course at Labasa for the A Hussein & Company sponsored Pro-am event this weekend.

This has been possible through the kind sponsorship of A Hussein & Company, director Hazeem Hussein who is a passionate golfer too.

Hussein has been instrumental in getting the PGA to come to Labasa through a $2500 sponsorship.

“We have been sponsoring the Vanua Levu Open for the last ten years but pro-am for the first time,” he said.

“We might look at having it annually to promote the sports on this side of Fiji.”

“Golfers in Labasa are excited for the two-day event as we have 40 members but only 30 are pretty regulars.”

“We have been supporting golf and other major sporting teams in Labasa including Nasekula Rugby.”

Labasa has produced top golfers like Abid Hussein, Nigel Gounder, and Beera Gounder who have gone on to represent Fiji.

“We have a lot of assistance from the Fiji Sugar Corporation in terms of the maintenance of the golf course.”

Fiji PGA president Vikrant Chandra will lead the professionals alongside Fiji PGA treasurer Roneel Prakash and secretary, Amitesh Chandra.

Other professionals who have signed up are in-form Tomasi Tuivuna, Anasa Seruvatu, Ritesh Chandra, Praneel Prasad, veteran Mahmud Buksh and Munesh Prasad.

Around 20 golfers from Viti Levu are expected to participate.
