Adrian College women’s volleyball kicks off season Sunday

ADRIAN — The Adrian College women’s volleyball team kicked off its season Sunday morning against Trine at home at the Merlilat Sport and Fitness Center, falling in straight sets to the visiting Thunder, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23.

Leading the Bulldogs (0-1) on Sunday was Grace Welch, who had a match-high 12 kills, six digs, two assists, one ace and one block assist, while Liz Susitko tied Hannah Sugg for the team-high in digs (11) and leading the team in assists (17), with Sugg connecting for a team-high three aces.

Allison Ashurst had four block assists to go with five kills and five digs while Hannah Cuddleback added eight digs for the Bulldogs, who had a kill percentage of 0.061 compared to 0.16 for Trine (3-0).

SOCCER

Siena Heights (w) 1, Indiana Tech 0: At Adrian, the Saints women’s soccer team scored a milestone victory on Saturday, becoming the first women’s college soccer program in Michigan to hit 450 wins with its victory over the Warriors.

The lone goal of the contest came in the 23rd minute, as after Jennifer Richmond stole the ball away from an Indiana Tech (0-3, 0-1 WHAC) defender in the Warriors’ defensive third of the pitch, Richmond cross the ball into the box for Marissa Young, who punched it home from in close to put SHU (1-0, 1-0) ahead for good.

Kara Bishop (1-0) got the win in goal for the Saints, stopping all three shots from the Warriors, while Christina Wynn (0-2) took the loss for Indiana Tech despite stopping 12 of 13 shots from the Saints.

Indiana Tech 3, Siena Heights (m) 0: At Adrian, the Saints were unable to find the back of the net against the Warriors in their season opener on Saturday.

Indiana Tech (1-0, 1-0 WHAC) struck early in the contest, scoring twice in the first four minutes of the match and added another goal with 15 minutes to go in the first half as SHU failed to get a shot off in the first half.

Siena Heights (0-1, 0-1) managed just one shot in 90 minutes courtesy of Matheus Marrote that ended up missing high. Andrew Kozan (0-1) took the loss in goal for the Saints, stopping eight of 11 shots. Juame Salvado (1-0) got the win between the pipes for the Warriors despite facing no shots in the first 45 minutes, before Edwin Rosado relieved him at the half and played the rest of the contest.

Lawrence Tech 7, Adrian (m) 1: At Southfield, the Bulldogs had a rough go of it against the Blue Devils as the squad allowed four first-half goals and were unable to recover on Saturday.

Lawrence Tech (2-0) scored the first five goals of the match before Adrian’s Logan Thomas scored off a Dylan Mines assist in the 60th minute of the contest, but the Bulldogs were unable to rally back and ultimately allowed two more goals before time ran out.

Zack DeRoeck got the call in net for Adrian (0-2) but suffered his second loss of the fall season, stopping four of 11 shots from the Blue Devils.

Tennis

Concordia (Mich.) at Adrian: The Bulldog men’s and women’s tennis teams were able to pick up identical 6-3 wins over the visiting Cardinals on Saturday at the Craft Tennis Complex for each squads first win of the fall season.

On the AC men’s side for doubles, the pairing of Ronald Ducharme and Ryan Cuddy at first doubles grabbed an 8-1 win while the second doubles duo of Jackson Wilcox and Joey Quigley took away an 8-5 victory.

For the Adrian men (1-1) in singles, Cuddy at second singles and Quigley at fifth singles both grabbed their second wins of the day, Cuddy via a 6-3, 6-1 decision and Quigley with a 7-5, 7-5 win. Zach Perry (third singles) rallied from a first set defeat to win 4-6, 6-1, 10-4, while Whitman Hopper (sixth singles) grabbed a 6-0, 7-5 win.

Adrian’s women’s team picked up a pair of wins out of the doubles matches, as Ellie Himebauch and Maddie Wagner at second doubles won 8-0 while Victoria Garagasoulas and Elena Engle (third doubles) won via a 8-2 scoreline.

Gargasoulas led the AC women (1-2) in the singles flight, sweeping her match at third singles 6-0, 6-0 as Himebauch (fourth singles) and Maddie Wagner (fifth singles) also grabbed their second wins Saturday with 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-0 victories respectively, while Jamie Nicholls at sixth singles rounded out the victories for the Bulldogs with a 6-3, 6-1 decision.

Cross Country

Siena Heights at Siena Heights Invitation: At Adrian, the SHU men’s and women’s cross country runners each took home top honors at their home meet at Heritage Park on Saturday morning.

The Saint men won with a team score of 27 ahead of Rochester (50), Cleary (72) and Concordia (Mich.) at 89, while the SHU women won with a score of 30 ahead of the Cardinals (47) and Warriors (56).

Liam Hartsuff picked up a individual win for the SHU runners, coming across the line in 26 minutes, 5.89 seconds, over a half minute ahead of the runner-up, while Jordan Parkinson (27:41.49) also brought home a top five finish in fourth. Bradley Bauer (28:01.15) and Abullah Nassr (28:10.17) finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh, while Cedric Grant (28:51.27) rounded out the Saint men scorers in ninth.

The Siena women’s team won off their consistency, with all of their scoring runners finishing fourth through eighth, led by Xochitl Garcia’s 19:27.18 in fourth. Rachel Wiltse (20:16.55) was next in fifth, while Emily Monroe (20:32.68) and Brianna Martin (20:35.97) were close together in sixth and seventh respectively, with Alexis Cordle (21:25.51) rounding out the scoring runners for SHU in eighth.

Adrian at Calvin: At Grand Rapids, the Bulldog men’s and women’s runners each came home in third of three in the tri-meet against the hosting Knights and Trine.

The Bulldog men finished with a score of 74 as opposed to Calvin’s 18 and Trine’s 48, while the AC women scored an 85 against the Thunder women’s 25 and Knights 33.

Leading the AC men was Robert Diebold, who finished with a 25:43.59 for sixth, while Brett Carlisle was 17th with a 26:50.34. Caleb Billings was next for Adrian with a 28:09.70 in 38th place, while William Martin (29:02.91) and Adam Smith (29:10.18) were the final scorers in 45th and 48th respectively.

Emme Klutz led the way for the Bulldog women, taking 25th place with a 25:00.48, while Mallory Bowker (25:43.76) finished next in 27th. Bailey Mruzik (28:08.06), Erika Parkinson (28:31.44) and Katelyn Parkinson (28:49.58) were the other scoring runners for AC in 31st, 33rd and 34th respectively.

Golf

Adrian (w) at Calvin University Invitational: At Grand Rapids, the Bulldog women closed out its fall season with a second place finish at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Course, carding 341 as a team.

Hailey Scott led the way for Adrian, which had all of its scoring golfers finish in the top 10 Saturday, in third place with an 82, while Taylor Ross was two shots back in fifth with an 84. Lauren Yankee (87) was next with an eighth place effort, while Ashlynn Challand (88) finished in a tie for ninth.

Trine swept with a 334 to win the team title and the Thunder’s Jenna Doumont's score of 77 locking up medalist honors.

Adrian (m) at Trine University Invitational: At Angola, Ind., the Bulldogs combined to card a 317 and take third in the invite hosted by the Thunder at the Zollner Golf Course.

Trevor Benoit played as an individual and had the best score for any Adrian golfer with a 75 in a sixth-place tie.

Leading the official Bulldog men’s squad Saturday was Noah Kosal’s 76 in a tie for eighth, while Hayden Winch (79) and Steven Hill (80) finished a shot apart in ties for 19th and 23rd. Joe Kowatch’s 82 was the final scoring effort in Angola, good for a tie for 32nd place.
