And that's yer lot

Lombard sets up a great chance for birdie at the last but pushes his putt past the cup. He cards a 71 and is two back overnight.

It's been an up-and-down day but that leaderboard is bubbling up nicely. It could well boil over tomorrow with the likes of McIlroy, Fleetwood, Spieth and, yes, Woods not far behind.

Join us again tomorrow for all the action at Carnoustie.

20:15
Lombard's slipping back

Among a leaderboard packed full of surprises, the biggest surprise package of all is finally running out of steam it seems. Lombard sees a lengthy par putt on 17 slide by to add to another bogey on the 16th. The South African is now two back at four under.

He's the only one of the leaders still out there now, and launches a big drive down the middle of the 18th fairway.

Justin Rose celebrates after his birdie putt on the 18th green saw him make the cut
20:06
Trouble for Finau on 18

He's still way short of the Barry Burn after two shots and his ball is buried in the deep stuff. But he produces a fine recovery, hacking through the fescue and flipping a fine wedge up over the flag and leaving himself eight feet to save par. That, however, proves too much, with his ball stopping agonisingly on the lip of the cup but refusing to drop.

That closing bogey sees Finau fall back into the group on four under, with his fine round somehow only ending up as a level-par 71.

He's overtaken on the leaderboard by his playing partner Schauffele, who gets up and down in fine style to card a brilliant 66.

Fowler, a little earlier, parred the last for a 69 and he's three under, just outside the top-10. A closing birdie for playing partner Rahm is merely a consolation, however. The Spaniard blew up mid-way through his round and he limped to a 78, missing the cut by two shots.

Tony Finau shows his frustration on the 18th hole after a closing bogey
19:58
The defending champion in prime position to make a move on Saturday

Jordan Spieth is a big tournament player. After a one over par round of 72 on Thursday, he returned on Friday with a four under par round of 67. That has left him three under par for the tournament.

He is only three shots back from the leaders Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner on six under par.

19:54
'It was pretty crazy out there'

After carding a three under par round, Pat Perez said the situation he found himself in was 'pretty crazy'.

He told Sky Sports: 'Everything just felt really, really great out there. It was pretty crazy out there. It was a lot of fun and who knows what could happen tomorrow and Sunday.'

19:35
Sportsmail's Mike Dickson reports from Carnoustie

Had Justin Rose not made that putt it would have been the first time at the Open since the rankings were formulated first in 1986 that the world’s top three players had missed the cut. World No 1 Dustin Johnson and No 2 Justin Thomas are heading home.

19:29
Lombard for eagle on 14...

Eek! Lipped out! But he taps in for birdie and grabs a share of the lead once again.

Rose now lines up the putt that will see him either make or miss the cut.

It's in! Back to three over. Nine shots behind the leaders so a long way back, but you can only win if you're playing at the weekend. Well played sir.

It's a 73 for Rose, while Spieth wraps up a 67 to head to the clubhouse on three under.

19:26
Rose gives himself a chance

Another excellent iron shot over these brutak final holes leaves 10 feet for birdie, and to make the cut. Can he finally tame that misbehaving putter?

19:23
Koooooooch!

What a way to finish for Kuchar, draining a 30-footer at the last. Last year's runner-up cards a 68 and is now right in the mix at four under.

Finau doesn't last long in the lead, paying the price for a wild approach into the 15th which sees his ball find a grassy knoll. Just Kisner and Zach Johnson on six under now.

19:17
Sun is shining, weather is sweet

Carnoustie right now is a far cry from the wet, cold, dank conditions experienced this morning. There's no doubt that the players out on the course this afternoon have been blessed by the favourable side of the draw - there's no wind to speak of, the rough is no longer wet and clingy, and it's just a very pleasant evening to play golf. Time to make hay...

19:15
Finau joins the lead!

Not quite the eagle of his playing partner, but a two-putt birdie sees Finau join the group at the top. His play has deserved it too - simply marvellous from tee-to-green today.

19:13
Eagle!

Schauffele is in the mix now! Plenty of big guns have had looks at eagle on the par-5 14th today, but this man is the first to take full advantage. Four under par now for the man who won the PGA Tour's TOUR Championship during his breakthrough last year. He's a proper player this one - keep your eye on him.

19:10
19:06
Perez and Lombard drop out of the lead

The American can't make up for his mistake off the tee on the 18th and drops his only shot of the day. He still signs for a 68 though, and is five under.

Lombard is back at that same mark after a bogey at 12.

And Rose fails to make his crucial putt on 16. The cut is looming.

Zander Lombard takes a puff on his vape on the 12th fairway
19:04
Bogey for Spieth

And he actually did well to drop just one shot. His tee shot left him 48 yards to the green, with a bunker to pitch over. Ouch. But after his wedge landed in the long stuff, he got up and down with impressive ease. Back to four under.

18:55
Fore right!

Awful tee shot by Spieth on the par-3 16th, blocked miles right, way right even of the bunkers guarding the green.

Oh, but what a blow by Rose. He's chased a beautiful long iron up the 16th green - a 248-yard par-3, remember - to six feet. One of the shots of the day. He must, must, must birdie one of the closing three holes to make the cut. This is his chance.

Perez strikes back at the 18th with a fine approach, meanwhile - 20 feet left to save par.

18:50
Perez is in a spot of bother

He's found a fairway bunker with his drive at the last, and can only splash out 20 yards back onto the fairway. Carnoustie's deadly finishing hole looks like claiming another victim.

18:48
Another chance for Finau... and another one gone

This time after finding the heart of the green on 13. Twenty feet at most, but the ball slides by to the left.

Big putt from Rose on 15, from around 15 feet. It was for par after a drive into a bunker forced a hack out sideways, and a bogey would have ensured he misses the cut. He still needs at least one birdie on the way in, mind, or he's heading home.

18:39
Cor...

Spieth's on trouble on the 15th after a hook off the tee.

Here's a stat that shows just how tough Carnoustie's finish is...

18:38
At last... Finau drains one

A long putt too, on the 12th. Back to five under for the huge-hitting American, who's a real character. He's from the mean streets of Salt Lake City, escaped gang life through golf and is as big and powerful as a back-row rugby forward. He's of Tongan descent, and even knows how to do a fire-knife dance. Which is exactly as dangerous as it sounds.

18:33
Eagle chance for Spieth

Wonderful approach into the par-5 14th. This will send shockwaves through the field if it drops. But no! Spieth throws his head back in anguish after another fine effort stays above ground. It's a tap-in birdie, however, and he's now four under, just two shots back.

Jordan Spieth plays his second shot on the 12th hole during round two
18:25
Koooooooch!

He's always hanging around but you never notice him until... bang.

Suddenly Matt Kuchar, last year's unlucky runner-up after being blown away by Spieth over the closing holes at Birkdale, is into the top-10 after back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14. Three under now, three shots back... just like Spieth.

Finau's let a shot go after a bogey at the 10th, however. Four under.

18:21
The Open sometimes throws up some quirky leaders, or even winners

Ben Curtis, Todd Hamilton etc etc.

But to emphasise just how unlikely a leader Lombard is, check out his last 12 finishes:

Cut Cut Cut T-34 Cut Cut Cut Cut Cut Cut T-6 Cut

South Africa's Zander Lombard is the unlikely leader of The Open
18:19
Rose is in big trouble

Bogey at the 13th continues his miserable day. Three bogeys, no birdies, and he's now slipped below the cut line, with those daunting four finishing holes to come. The writing could be on the wall here. Must make birdie at the 14th to be here for the weekend, surely.

Justin Rose speaks with Kiradech Aphibarnrat at Carnoustie on Friday
18:14
Nope.

Not this time for Spieth but he's playing superb golf, four under for the day and looking the danger man just below the leaders.

Perez nails a nervy six-footer for par on the 15th after blowing his birdie putt past, and stays at the top of the leaderboard.

18:12
It's all gone a little quiet...

... but Spieth is lining up another birdie putt on the 13th.

18:11
18:01
18:00
Who'd have thought it? Perez joins the lead!

Six under leads The Open. Zander Lombard, Pat Perez, Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner lead The Open.

Get your head around that...

Perez is now four under for his day, including no bogeys, after another one drops at the 14th.

17:57
Hits the flag!

Webb Simpson, creeping along at one under, fires a fairway wood into the 17th and his ball crashes into the flagstick. Short one left to go to two under.

Fowler's back to minus three after a bounceback birdie on 11.

17:54
Here's Kisner going splash
17:53
Sportsmail's Mike Dickson reports from Carnoustie

The projected cut has shifted at present to three over par, which may be good news for Justin Rose, who has fallen back to that mark after a bogey at the 10th. Nothing, however, is going to save Darren Clarke, who is on 20 over par after collecting his second double bogey of the day.

17:50
Lombard joins the lead!

Where on earth has this man come from? The 23-year-old South African has been quietly going about his business but suddenly drops a bomb on the 7th to take advantage of Kisner's slip at the last. Lombard is a real bolter - he missed six cuts in succession before the recent Irish Open, where he earned his Open spot by finishing sixth.

Willet is in with a 'sneaky' 71, meanwhile. He's at two under at halfway.

17:46
Double-bogey for Kisner... the lead is six under

Shocker at the last for the leader, and he'll have to sleep on that. But he still leads alongside fellow short-hitting american Zach Johnson.

Spieth, meanwhile, is carving through the field. Another birdie on the 11th sends him to three under. The defending champion is just three off the lead now.

Kevin Kisner chips over the Barry Burn after finding it with his approach into the 18th hole
17:40
Kisner drops and chips...

... but he's nowhere near. Staring at double bogey here.

Two birdies in three holes sends Xander Schauffele (ask him how to pronounce it, not me) flying up the leaderboard at two under and into the top-10. But Fowler slips back alongside him after a sloppy bogey at 10.

17:35
Kisner's going for a swim in the Barry Burn!

The leader goes for the green from the left rough on the 18th, and hasn't got the muscle to reach the green. His ball falls into the dreaded Barry Burn that runs across the fairway, and he'll be dropping shots here. Kisner pauses to reflect on what he's just done. Ever heard of a bloke called Jean van de Velde, Kevin?

17:32
So close again for Kisner

This man's putting has been staggering today. This time a 60-footer on the fiendish 17th lips out. Just a par, but he still leads by two.

Spieth, meanwhile, is three under through 10 holes after a wondrous escape, smashing his approach from the rough, through the gap in two trees, all the way to 10 feet from the pin. No mistake with the putter and he's two under.

At the other end of the Kisner scale, Finau is setting up good birdie chances on nearly every hole, but just can't convert any of them. Painfully like Lee Westwood in his prime at the majors - so good from tee to green but so many chances wasted. This time an 8-footer slides by on the 8th, and he stays at five under.

17:25
Rahm's kicking off!

He's forced to hack out of the bunker sideways, and proceeds to then miss the green on the left, narrowly avoiding another trap. And there goes the club! He's bunged it right at his bag in fury, chuntering away too.

It's a double bogey after a miss from 8 feet. He's now three over. Six shots gone in three holes. From right in contention to on the cusp of missing the cut. No wonder he's on the Rahm-page!

Playing partner Fowler drops his first shot of the day on the 9th, after hacking his way up the left side all the way up the hole. Back to three under.

Jon Rahm reacts to a missed putt on the 8th hole, where he made bogey
17:19
All very quiet for Rose

No birdies today, one bogey, and he's two over for the championship after his front nine. That's just one shot ahead of the cut line, by the way. Not what many people would have expected heading into this Open. Looks like his strangely subdued record in this event could continue.

17:15
Another bogey for Rahm

Another bogey on the 8th leaves Rahm absolutely steaming. He's one over now. Then his drive on the 9th finds a bunker, leaving Rahm on the verge of breaking the shaft in two over his knee. 'Don't do it, you need it!' shouts someone in the crowd. Just pity his poor caddie...

17:09
Welcome to the party, Pat Perez!

The American domination of Carnoustie continues as the Californian birdies the 11th to get to 5 under. 'He's a piece of work this guy. He'll say anything to anyone,' says Butch Harmon of Perez, who is known as quite a character. Three birdies and no bogeys today means he's quite a golfer too.

More on Perez: he's 42, has a notorious temper, wears his hair in a mullet, listens to rap music, is a Trump fan and says of his caddie (according to Golf magazine in 2017): explaining his relationship with his caddy, 'I drink, he doesn’t. I smoke, he doesn’t. I spend money, he doesn’t. I cuss, he doesn't. I’m a motherf***er, he isn’t.'

Pat Perez putting on the 6th green during the second round
16:59
Rahm is fuming... triple bogey!

Wow. Horror hole for Rahm, who has dropped three strokes on a relatively short par-4. His awful tee shot was compounded by a poor approach and a mediocre chip. Stand back on the 8th tee - he's got a seriously short fuse and he's ready to explode!

That's Rahm back to even par, two over for the day.

16:57
Kisner for birdie on 15, from all of 60 feet...

... so close! The leader's putter is on fire. He so nearly jars yet another long one but the ball dies away at the last split-second.

16:50
16:50
Fore right!

Rahm blasts out of bounds on the 7th hole, after just a par on the par-5 6th, Hogan's Alley, named after the great Ben Hogan, who won at Carnoustie in 1953. Big mistake by the Spaniard, dropped shots coming here, surely.

16:47
USA!

This leaderboard is splattered with stars and stripes. Six of the top-10 are American, with that man Kisner confounding expectations and still leading. Then there's two South Africans in Zander Lombard, who's one under for the day and five under overall, and Van Rooyen, who's having his lunch after a 71 to sit four under. It's some well-earned grub too after he nails a 10-footer for par on the last. Fleetwood asd McIlroy are the only Europeans in the upper echelons.

16:38
Kisner's got a chance to go to eight under...

The leader stuffed his second shot into the par-5 14th into the front bunker but splashed out expertly to six feet. And he makes it! The lead stretches to two shots over Zach Johnson, at eight-under. Fleetwood is one further back and in the hut.

Finau, over on 4, leaves a 10-footer for birdie short and stays at five under.

16:27
Farewell, Sandy

The crowd bid a warm goodbye to the 1985 champion, Sandy Lyle, as he walks down the 18th for the final time at an Open Championship. The 60-year-old Scot looks like he might be shedding a few tears, and he can hold his head high after a round of 76, not good enough to make the cut but plenty better than many much younger players this week. And it's all sealed with a brilliant, curling, 25-foot birdie putt. Fabulous.

Mickelson, meanwhile, is staging a bit of a comeback. Birdies ion 11 and 13 claw him back to two under for the day, even par for the championship.

Sandy Lyle acknowledges the crowd on the 18th as he plays his final shots in an Open
16:20
Spieth drains another one!

The defending champion looks like he means business today. He's back into red numbers after holing a swinging 25-footer on the 5th.

And Kisner holes too! He grabs the outright lead again over on the 13th, holing another beautiful putt to move back to seven under.

And Finau is the latest American to take advantage of the best scoring conditions of the week by spinning a wedge into the 2nd and holing. He's at five under.

Rose, however, bogeys the 4th to slip back to plus two.

Chris Wood of England plays his second shot on the 4th hole during round two
16:09
Oh Rickie you're so fine...

...you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Rickie!

It's always puzzled me how no-one's picked up that as a chant... Anyway, Fowler is on the charge. A bullet of a tee-shot at the 4th sets up a birdie from 10 feet, his third in four holes. He's rocketing up the leaderboard now, into 5th place at four under.

16:03
Topsy-turvy round for Danny Willett

But he's back up there again at two under after picking up shots at the 14th and 15th. He's bounced back from a double at the 12th and the former Masters champion is doing nothing but impress this week after near enough two years of injury misery and poor form.

15:55
Bounce back from Rahm

Birdie-bogey-birdie start for the Spanish bull after draining an eight-footer. But's it's even better for playing partner Fowler, who's picked up another shot on the 3rd, with no dropped shots.

Back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th has Matt Southgate screaming in celebration, meanwhile. Big fist-pump! The Englishman has finished 12th and 6th in the last two Opens, remember.

15:49
Take a bow, Jordan Spieth

Brilliant chip-in seals birdie on the 3rd and gets the defending champion back to even par.

Here, take a look...

15:40
Sportsmail's Mike Dickson reports from Carnoustie

So I’m now up to five players I’ve requested to speak to after their rounds who have flat refused to come into the mixed zone: Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson and Ian Poulter. All of them are free to walk off if they please and have taken advantage of that after most likely missing the cut, but it still seems weak. Pinning my hopes now on Sandy Lyle talking after what will be his valedictory round at the Open.

15:38
So what's with Tiger's neck tape?

A few fans might be worried in seeing Woods wearing some ominous-looking black tape on the back of his neck. But that's nothing serious, we're told. It's kinesiology tape used to alleviate a little stiffness after a poor night's sleep, apparently, and is used by many athletes. Woods's past serious injury problems have come in his lower back, not his neck.

Tiger Woods wears kinesiology tape on his neck during the second round
15:34
Oh, Tiger!!!

The putt - six feet it was - misses right and that's a big chance gone. Woods signs for a second straight 71 and is eight shots shy of the lead as it stands. But that's still right in the mix heading into the weekend.

Sorry, make that seven shots off the lead. Kisner misses the green at the 10th and leaves his Texas wedge 10 feet short. The putt rolls by and the lead is back to six under, alongside Johnson.

15:28
Oh, Tiger.

That's Woods at his best. Fires right at the pin after a stinger off the tee, and watches his ball roll gently to settle five feet from the pin. Hole that and Woods will shoot consecutive rounds at par or better to start a major for the first time since the 2013 Open. He finished 6th at Muirfield that year.

Rose and Spieth both missed birdie chances on the 1st, by the way, and stay one over.

15:23
First blood for Rahm-bo!

Conditions are as good as they've been all day now - wind down, rain abated, calm, cool... and ready for someone to shoot a low score.

It could be Rickie Fowler, who wedges in to 8 feet on the 1st before holing the putt. Or it could be Jon Rahm, who gets his pitch even closer.

Fowler is now at two under, Rahm at three under. Keep your eye on these two.

Jon Rahm of Spain tees off at the 1st hole during round two at Carnoustie
15:15
Well, well, well

Sung Kang, who was at the centre of a storm three weeks ago when he was accused of cheating by a playing partner, is up to 8th after a birdie on the 3rd. Just three shots adrift now. Let's just say this would not go down well with a few players - the cheating accusation has not been fully resolved, and these things have a habit of hanging around for years in golf.

Sergio, meanwhile, gets the lucky break of the week as he crashes his approach at the 18th into the Barry Burn, but sees his ball bounce back out again off the stone walls. He'll still probably miss the cut on four over, however.

Another big name who is definitely heading home at the halfway stage is world No 1 Dustin Johnson. A double-bogey at the last saw him card a 72, leaving him stranded on 6 over.

15:10
Rose takes dead aim on the 1st

And it's right over the flag, looking good... but goes a little long. 20 feet left for an opening birdie. Rose isn't happy with that though, giving his caddie Fooch a minor ticking off for the club choice.

Spieth gets his approach from the right rough even closer, just 10 feet to go for the defending champion.

Tiger's on the dancefloor in two on the fiendish 17th - just one birdie on that hole all day (well done, Jonas Blixt) so far. The 40-foot birdie putt is good but burns the edge of the cup. Stays at level.

15:05
The lead is back to six under

Kisner left himself too much to do after short-siding himself in the bunker in front of the 8th green, blasting out but failing to hole the 25-footer.

Erik van Rooyen's hanging around though, a birdie on the 11th taking the South African back to four under.

14:55
Here's Kisner's latest huge putt on the 7th

He's found the sand off the 8th tee, however. Trouble.

14:55
Bogey for Tiger

Poor bunker shot leaves Woods too much to do for his par three - he's back to even par.

Koepka absolutely stuffs one on 18, nearly holing it, to leave 18 inches for birdie. That's a round of 69 for the US Open champion. He's in the hut at one under, right in the mix.

14:51
Kisner takes the lead

Another bomb! The unlikely leader keeps confounding his doubters, this time with another long putt on the 7th. That was form all of 35 feet and more. Two birdies in his last three holes, which takes him one clear of Johnson and two from Fleetwood.

14:48
Uh-oh

Mickelson goes from red numbers to black in the blink of an eye after a double-bogey on the par-5 6th. That's most of his good work so far - he made three birdies in his first five holes - undone by a huge pull-hook off the tee.

Tiger's misbehaving swing returns as he flares one right into the bunker on 16, that ridiculously tough 248-yard par-3.

14:43
Stand by for some big guns going out soon

Rose, Spieth, Fowler, Rahm, Reed, Casey, Finau and more coming up in the next half an hour...

14:33
Tiger's staring this one up and down

It's been an up and down day but it looks like he's got his eye in now. Perfect drawing iron off the tee then an approach that lands on the front of the green and releases to 15 feet. Another birdie chance.

US Open champion Koepka bogeys the horrific 16th to slip back to even par.

Tiger Woods hits an iron out of the rough on the 2nd hole
14:27

Daniel Berger will miss the cut on +4.

14:26
Kisner joins the lead

Unfancied he may have been, but the short(ish)-hitting American grabs back a share of the lead he held overnight after a three at the 5th. He didn't like his approach from the rough, yelping at it to get down, but gets a little lucky to set up a short putt. Bingo.

14:22
Birdie for Tiger... and birdie for Phil

Two putts for Woods as his eagle effort drifts wide right. Tap-in moves him into a tie for 16th.

Fellow old-timer Mickelson matches him with a bird on the 5th - he's also on one under.

Not bad for two forty-somethings eh?

14:15
Here comes Tiger!

Iron off the tee at the 14th - the famous 'Spectacles' hole, due to its twin fairway bunkers that sit side by side staring at you. 236 yards to go. Then a corker, a bullet of an approach that takes a nice kick and rolls onto the front of the green, 15 feet from the flag. Eagle chance coming up.

14:05
Here comes Phil

Mickelson struck a wonderful long putt on the fourth to slip back down to even par, he's on the march this afternoon already with two birdies in his first four holes.

14:03
Great save from Woods on 14

A tee shot on the par three had Tiger shouting at himself again but he recovered to sink a 12-footer and walk away with a valuable par, he's been clinging on a bit but the grip is still strong.

14:01
Eddie Pepperell moves to -1

The 27-year-old Englishman has started his round with five pars and now a birdie at the sixth to reach -1. He was runner-up in the Scottish Open on Sunday, a finish that booked him his place in Carnoustie. Pepperell tied for 49th in his only previous appearance in the Open in 2015.

13:58
Fans out in force despite grim conditions
13:51
Woods sinks five-footer on 12 to stay level

Simple enough for Tiger, he pushed a monster putt from the other side of the green to around five feet away and duly rolls it in to stay even.

Now he'll be gunning for a couple of birdies before launching himself into the weekend at least some hope of lifting the claret jug.

13:48
MIKE DICKSON AT CARNOUSTIE:

'So that’s the world number one and two, Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas, who both look like missing the cut and have just stormed without speaking to the media.

'They can do this without any sanction here, but it’s poor behaviour for players of their status and compares very unfavourably to Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, their tennis counterparts, who always front up after defeats.'

13:46
Van Rooyan on the charge

Another birdie for Van Rooyan moves him to -5 after the seventh hole. He's playing so confidently in his Open debut. He carried a four shot lead into the final round of the Irish Open the week before last but finished fourth and will be keen to show his mettle at Carnoustie, he's done just that so far.

13:38
How Zach Johnson took the lead with final shot of the round
13:36
Mickelson wearing two gloves, slots birdie and moves to +1

Phil Mickelson is dressed entirely in black with two gloves on. He'd look slightly odd if he wasn't on the golf course, there's a bit of a blade-runner feel to his aesthetic. Sartorial prowess aside, the lefty tucks in a putt on the second for birdie.

13:30
Tough day at the office for Justin Thomas

The world No 2 has endured a day forget, finishing up on +4 after going out in 42. He collapsed to three double bogeys in a row on 6,7 and eight and now it looks like he won't be here at the weekend.

13:27
Tiger back to par once more

Birdie attempt at the 11th for Woods rolls straight into the heart of the hole, he's back to level par.

The 12th is a tough par four but there are scoring opportunities to come and the fretful Tiger may yet transform into a more bullish one.

13:22
A flip of the club in frustration for Van Rooyen

Van Rooyen remains right in the mix, he flicks his putter up in disgust as a putt on six creeps painfully wide. He's giving himself some decent scoring opportunities though and is two shots off the lead at -4.

13:18
Danny 'stormtrooper' Willett tucks in par at fifth

Willett is dressed in some questionable black and white waterproof clothing, stormtrooper-esque, and the Englishman has made a solid start, following his birdie at the first with four pars, he remains -3.

13:13
Adam Scott ends up -1 after par on the last

After a long road back from the belly putter, Scott is beginning to look strong again, he's been solid all day and rounds it off with a par to warm applause from the fans who have braved horrible conditions in the grandstand.

13:09
Zach Johnson holes out to take lead - superb round of 67

Johnson punches the air after draining a 20 footer to finish the round with a birdie and take an outright lead at -6.

What a round for the American and he'll be right up there on Sunday you'd think.

13:00
Woods reaches the turn in +1, 37

Woods bogeys the ninth after recovering well from a wayward tee shot, he looks exasperated with that one and moves to one over.

He shouts 'dammit' after sending his tee shot on the tenth into the long grass, he's battling himself out there and has been pretty vocal so far.

12:55
Zach Johnson on fire with the putter

A par for Johnson as the putter breaks him out of jail to keep momentum going. He remains in the joint lead at -5 but Kisner is about to tee off.

12:52
Fleetwood's assessment:

'I struggled yesterday tee to green and we had a good hour on the range, came out today and hit it a lot better and I hold a lot of great putts. Momentum kept going and it was a good one, conditions were tough and the pins were tucked away, I don't mind the rain but it was playing a lot longer today.

'Even with my swing not feeling the best all the time, you get away with a lot more working within your own parameters, it was nice to have a chance at the last to get that birdie.'

12:47
Keegan Bradley chips in from bunker at the eighth

The American produces arguably the shot of the day, opening the club face in the sand before firing a delicate pitch onto the green and it rolls perfectly into the hole. He's five over now and faces a battle to make the cut, which could be around +3.

12:44
McIlroy finishes with a 69

McIlroy sinks to his knees after watching his putt for a birdie at the last trickle just wide. But it's been a solid round and he's right in amongst it, a shot off the lead and you'd think he won't be far away when the day's play ends.

12:41
Molinari bogeys 14, back to -2

The back nine has been a struggle for Molinari so far with three bogeys. It would be a real shame if he continues slipping down the leaderboard after such a bright start to the morning.

12:39
Van Rooyen back to -4

The South African was a surprise name towards the top of the leaderboard after yesterday's opening round.

And after an early bogey today he's back on track with a birdie on three. He qualified after coming second in Johannesburg and is clearly at the top of his game, he should get the better of the conditions too.

12:35
Here's how Fleetwood wrapped up a 65
12:33
Forlorn Tiger leaves one short, settles for par

The par three eighth teases Tiger for a second as he thinks the birdie might slide in on a drifting downhill putt. It settles just short and an exasperated looking Woods nudges it in to take par.

12:28
Great up and down save from McIlroy

McIlroy will head to the 18th with an extra bounce in his step after rescuing par at 17 with a neat up and down. He's still on -4 and the warmth of the clubhouse after a well constructed round beckons.

12:23
Woods with a par at 7

Another par for Woods, who seems to have settled down nicely now at level par. It wouldn't be a bad score today but you know he'll be after something even more competitive.

12:22
Fleetwood finishes brilliant round with another birdie - he shares -5 lead

Tommy Fleetwood salutes the crowd on 18, taking his cap off and lapping up the acclaim after a superb round of 65. The Englishman is safely in the clubhouse with the joint lead, he'll seriously fancy his chances over the next couple of days now.

12:17
Willett kicks off round with birdie

Danny Willett looked like himself again yesterday. Since his Masters victory, the Sheffield native hasn't quite reached the same heights but yesterday's round of -2 showed him back somewhere near his best. A lovely putt from 15 foot moves that score to -3 at the first.

12:13
MIKE DICKSON AT CARNOUSTIE:

'Braving the foul weather today to watch Tiger Woods is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Rod Laver, 79. These days Rod calls Southern California home, so this is not exactly what he is used to.'

12:12
McIlroy with solid par at the tricky 16th - Zach Johnson shares lead

A nice one to be out of the way with no damage done. McIlroy charges onto the last couple of holes at -4 but there is a new joint leader as Zach Johnson fires down another birdie to haul himself level with Kisner on -5.

12:06
Jason Day lips out for bogey, Fleetwood pars 17th

Day moves back to -2 after seeing his putt at 12 agonizingly brush the cup and spit out wide by a couple of feet. Fleetwood meanwhile, remains one off the lead with a tidy par on 17. Can he close out the round with another birdie?

12:03
Woods takes par on sixth

The 14-time major champion rolls a long, undulating putt to within five feet and sees it off for par at the sixth. He stays at level par for the round and tournament.

11:59
McIlroy's joint lead is shortlived

Three holes to play for McIlroy and he's just dropped back down to -4 after picking up a bogey at 15.

It's been feast or famine on the back nine, though largely feast and he'll look to finish strong now.

11:48
The putt that did it
11:42
McIlroy powers into the lead

The Northern Irishman shares the lead now at -5 with Kisner, another birdie drops in nicely and this has been a brilliant back nine so far. He's got five holes to move into an outright lead and this is ominous looking form for the chasing pack to contend with.

11:40
And Molinari gets in on the act

That putter is still hot for Molinari and he moves to -3 after 11. The putt is uphill and drifts from left to right. Perfectly judged and he's in contention.

11:38
Woods rolls in sensational birdie - back to level par

That is just class from Woods, he follows two bogeys with two birdies, the latest one on the fifth was an absolute ripper, 20 feet and slap bang in the middle. He's back on track with the par five sixth up next.

11:36
Still plenty of drizzle around

The rain isn't coming down in the lashings it was earlier but there is still plenty of drizzle in the gloom. Conditions are improving though and there could be a sizable advantage to coming out slightly later.

11:26
Now McIlroy is back at it too

Another to vanquish the memory of a recent bogey is McIlroy who polishes off the 13th with a birdie.

His putting stroke has seemed more assured as the round has gone on and he's right in the thick of it towards the top of the leaderboard.

11:24
Tiger roars back with birdie

+1 now for Woods after he recovers from the last two bogeys in fine style, that will make him feel a whole lot better about his start and give him a lift going onto the fifth hole. The crowd are right behind him and roar their approval as it drops.

11:22
Fleetwood down to -4

A simple birdie chance is duly converted by the unshakable Englishman who drifts serenely onto the 15th.

He holds the course record here and is one back from the lead now. Fleetwood has seemed so poised all day and has been rewarded for the chances he keeps presenting himself on the greens.

11:18
MIKE DICKSON AT CARNOUSTIE:

'The man with the distinction of being first out of the Open is Brandt Snedeker, the American who had top five finishes in recent years at Lytham and Muirfield.

'He will assuredly miss the cut after walking off an almost deserted eighteenth green at twelve over par. I was interested to get his thoughts in the mixed zone but he declined to speak.'

11:16
McIlroy slips back to -3

First dropped shot of the day for McIlroy, his long putt at 12 doesn't have the gas to get there and he swings the club in frustration.

11:13
Ian Poulter back to +2 after birdie

The Englishman rattles in a long putt at the fifth to move back to +2 and hopefully kick start his round, it's proving to be a testing day out there so far and anything around even par could give players a chance ahead of the final two rounds.

11:09
Woods with back-to-back bogeys

Woods whacked his birdie attempt at the par four third around six feet past the hole. He really went for it and left himself an awkward one to save par and doesn't have enough pace. A real blow for Tiger to start par, bogey, bogey and move to +2.

11:03
Justin Thomas seriously struggling

Disastrous two holes for Justin Thomas.

The World No 2 cards consecutive double bogeys and is suddenly at +4, just goes to show how rapidly things can fall apart on this course.

11:01
Jason Day lips out birdie putt at eight

The Australian is ticking along nicely but will be disappointed to see this one skew off the left side of the hole. He stays at -2.

10:53
Woods walks away with bogey at 2nd

Woods drilled his third shot into the meat of the green, not looking to correct his errant second, the putt from 25 feet for par is well weighted but moves away to the left late on, he takes a bogey and moves to +1.

10:49
Zach Johnson misses birdie putt for share of the lead

The American misreads one from 12 foot and it finishes to the right of the hole at the ninth. That would have pulled him level with our leader Kisner but not to be.

10:46
Woods smacks it into the gallery

Tiger is in trouble on the second, his drive found the rough and then the gallery were forced by officials to back up and give him more room. But the lie is a nasty one and he sprays it into the gaggle of umbrellas. Nobody hurt but Woods will struggle to make par from there.

10:44
Here's that birdie at 10
10:40
McIlroy with another birdie, watch out Kisner

A birdie at the 10th moves McIlroy into a tie for second (-4) and that's two in the last three holes. The Northern Irishman is playing superbly out there and that putter is heating up very nicely.

10:34
Woods pushes it 18 inches past - takes par at the first

The American narrowly misses his putt at birdie but will be pleased with the pace on it. Solid start and he remains par for the tournament.

10:30
Par for McIlroy at the ninth

A really solid front nine for McIlroy who is one under for the round, he's playing well and you fancy a couple more of those half chances at birdie to drop.

10:28
Woods with a half chance at birdie

157 yards out for Woods, he floats it to the heart of the green and will have around 15-20 foot putt to launch the round with a birdie.

10:24
Haotong Li with a birdie to go -2

Li rolls one in at the par five sixth and he's started well today. The young Chinese player is one of the more popular on tour and is a huge star back home.

10:22
Tiger Woods starts his round

A warm round of applause on the first tee for Woods, as ever all eyes are trained on the golfing superstar.

He kick starts the second round of his 20th Open by finding the middle of the fairway. He's playing alongside Matsuyama and the Japanese follows suit. The home crowd also give a great reception to Russell Knox, he rewards them by matching his playing partners.

10:14
Molinari moves to -3 with birdie at sixth

At the par five sixth, Molinari perfectly judges his birdie putt and it drops satisfyingly as it runs out of steam. The Italian is -3 now and looks such a dangerous player when his work on the green matches his approach play.

10:11
Sergio Garcia and Bryson Dechambeau tee off

Both the Masters champion and his playing partner for the day finished up with a four over 75 yesterday but start well this morning, hammering their drives down the middle of the first.

10:06
Wonderful putt by McIlroy, he'll take par at the par three eighth

A long one from the fringe of the green lands just short of the cup, superbly judged and he taps in to take another par, he stays at -3 and -1 for the day.

10:00
Zach Johnson on the charge, -4

A lovely twisting, turning putt on the fifth gives Johnson his third birdie of the day and maybe he should keep those sunglasses on after all, he's -4 and sprinting up the leaderboard.

09:55
McIlroy gets his birdie and Olesen joins him at -3

That will be a nice little lift for McIlroy who buries the first clear birdie putt of his round, Olesen sinks his from slightly further away at the seventh. Could that be the spark to ignite their rounds?

09:50
Decent birdie chance for McIlroy

152 yards from the pin and that is a beautiful shot from McIlroy. His drive rested short of the bunker, it would have rolled in yesterday, but he has the chance to attack the hole and drops it around 10 feet away. A real birdie chance now.

09:45
Thomas chuffed with his long birdie, -2

Thomas pushes his long putt for birdie over a ridge and it drifts down towards the hole and into the middle. He shrugs his shoulders with a broad grin as the bogie at the fourth is swiftly forgotten.

09:43
Take a look at Zach Johnson's birdie at the fourth

Appreciate this effort from the former champion. Do not appreciate the fact that he is wearing sunglasses.

09:39
McIlroy with his sixth par in succession

McIlroy remains at -2 and is going steady with six pars to start his round. The scoring is pretty slow out there, as is the play and those going out later this afternoon may have a job finishing up in time.

09:29
Justin Thomas throws away par

Thomas with a poor miss at the par four fourth, the American slides back to -1 as he watches a putt from six feet escape the hole.

09:26
Jason Day saves par at the third

A birdie at the first for Jason Day has been followed up by a solid par putt from 10 foot. The Australian is -1 and could well charge up the leaderboard today.

09:22
McIlroy wayward with the driver again

McIlroy yells to the crowd on the right side of the par five sixth after hammering his drive well over. His scrambling has been brilliant and it will need to be again.

09:17
Ryan Moore pushes long putt wide on the eighth

Still work to do to clean up par at the eighth after his birdie putt from range ran an annoying few feet past the hole, no mistake with the follow up though and the American remains at -4.

09:11
Five pars now for McIlroy

A hint of frustration for the Northern Irishman, there have been chances out there, albeit tricky ones and his putt dies at the hole, tap in for par.

09:10
Molinari chasing back-to-back birdies - but leaves it a centimetre short

A fair few are tipping the Italian to do well here, he is so consistent and has given himself another birdie opportunity at the fourth. He couldn't have missed by any less and rocks back on his heels in disappointment. He stays -2.

09:06
More like it from McIlroy

158 yards out in the centre of the fairway, par four fifth, McIlroy launches it into the gloomy Scottish sky and it drops dead around 15 feet away, he'll have that for birdie.

09:02
That rain is getting heavier now

There's some debate about whether conditions are easier than yesterday with a bit of the sting taken out of the course, or whether the rain has made life more uncomfortable. The big hitter's aren't getting as much out of the fairways but general consensus is that it might play slightly easier today.

08:58
MIKE DICKSON AT CARNOUSTIE:

'The weather is very different today and I’m doing something I haven’t done for a whole two months – wearing a jumper. There was very little interest in Tommy Fleetwood last night – only about three journalists spoek to him – but he said he was a just a good start away from being back in the mix. The course record holder is already two under for today.'

08:52
Fleetwood makes a move

Lovely start for the Englishman as he bags a second birdie in quick succession, he's -1 now after sinking a long putt at the fifth. Meanwhile Stenson's start has been totally different, already two over.

08:50
Four pars to start for McIlroy - stays -2
08:48
Ryan Moore leaves long birdie chance short, still -4

A long birdie chance for Moore doesn't quite have the legs at the fifth hole, he remains one shot adrift of the Kisner in the lead but has found his rhythm again today by the looks of it.

08:46
He's safely onto the dancefloor

A huge clump of turf slips off McIlroy's iron as he holds the follow-through for a second, he's dug it out of the rough and landed around 20 feet short of the hole, a long look at birdie.

08:42
Par four fourth - McIlroy just in the rough on the right

A booming drive down the right hand side of the fourth rests in the long grass but that's the place to miss and he'll have a look at the pin on the left side of the green, depending on the lie.

08:37
Par, par, birdie start for Olesen and a birdie for Fleetwood

Olesen has made a solid start to move to -2 and Fleetwood is level again after draining a 12-footer. These greens are more forgiving than yesterday but the damp conditions isn't getting the spectators down, plenty are out on the course with umbrellas in hand.

08:34
But he's judged it brilliantly

A long, slightly uphill putt rests four foot away and that was superb judgment for McIlroy who is still searching for his first birdie of the morning.

08:31
McIlroy off the back of the green on the third

Some work to do for McIlroy at the third, he was down the middle of the fairway but overpitched to roll off the back and has a testing long putt now.

08:24
Stenson misses birdie chance - stays E

The defending champ slides one by from around seven feet but knocks in the follow up for par. A slight shake of the head and bend in the knees as the frustrated Swede walks away from the third with a par.

08:21
Sensational chip out of the long stuff from McIlroy - still at -2

The Northern Irishman hacks one out of the rough, and it trickles around three foot from the hole. A couple of wayward shots preceded it but that was class. He putts confidently to save par and remains level for the day.

08:19
A tap in for Leishman

A beautiful little chip and run lands a couple of inches short of the hole and the Australian taps in to remain +1 at the second.

08:16
And he's zigzagging

McIlroy squirted out his second and finds the rough on the right but is only around 20 metres from the hole. It's a tricky one to get down in two though.

08:09
Rory again with the driver

Second hole, par four, and McIlroy again goes with the driver, as promised.

It's a wide stance and doesn't go to plan, as the Northern Irishman finds the rough out on the left. He'll have his work cut out here.

08:06
McIlroy pars the first to stay two-under

His birdie attempt was pushed just past the hole, but its a comfortable and morale boosting par to begin things.

He remains tied eighth here at Carnoustie.

08:05
On the tee, Dustin Johnson

The big American and world No 1 smashes off the tee on the first with the driver, and it's a beauty.

Hard and central, he'll be set up well here for his approach shot. Alex Noren and Charlie Hoffman follow.

Johnson enters today's play five-over-par, with plenty of work to do.

08:02
Fleetwood goes big on the third

... but again it isn't enough. Another birdie opportunity presented itself, but the distance wasn't there on these moisture filled greens.

08:00
Stenson still has work to do

His third shot on the second, par four, sees the Swede fall the wrong side of the pin. An upward gradient now stands between him and sinking the putt.

07:58
Almost!

Kizzire rattles the pin from his fairway shot on the fifth, with the ball ricocheting across the green.

That would have been something special, given the distance of the approach.

07:56
Moore goes four-under

Meanwhile Ryan Moore is quietly going about his business. He sinks his first birdie on the third to go four-under-par.

07:55

Big opening strike for McIlroy, who goes straight off with the driver and finds the nice lay-up zone before the two bunkers sheltering the green.

Leishman follows, much more conservatively with the iron but he's dead straight.

07:52
Huge applause for McIlroy

As the Northern Irishman makes his way out on to the tee. As a reminder, he enters today's play at two-under-par.

Taking to the tee alongside him, Marc Leishman and Thorbjorn Olesen.

07:49
Henley on target

153 yards to the pin for Henley on the first, as his iron shot navigates the green well, avoiding the bunker to set up the chance for a solid early birdie.

He attempts it, but it narrowly wide. It will be a par start for the American.

07:46
No early birdie for Tommy

Fleetwood spurs a chance to take an early birdie on the second, playing up to the hole for a simple par putt.

All things considered, it's probably a good call.

07:45
Henley and Fitzpatrick off on the first

A nice reception for the pair, as they both opt for the three-wood.

Similar shots, nestling nicely within distance of each other on the fairway.

South Africa's Jovan Rebula follows, but finds some of the more unforgivable lie down the left.

07:37
Walker hones in on the pin

Solid approach shot from Walker on the second, one bounce from the iron shot and straight down the green.

He's given himself an easy job here to finish this one off, while Stenson also finds the green with ease, eliminating the hidden bunker at the right of the green on the second.

07:34
Westwood spurns early chance to go level

It's a long putt on the first for birdie, but Westwood can't make it.

He plays conservatively, with the damp green sucking the ball back.

More length needed, but he'll sink his par here on the opener.

07:33
Henrik Stenson takes to the tee

He's been battling with an elbow problem for the last month, but Stenson starts off well here on the first with an iron.

Hits left of centre, as intended, and the gathered crowds are pleased with that one.

Tommy Fleetwood follows, going bold with the driver, and hits generously down this opening 391-yard par four.

Jimmy Walker completes the trio, heading out this morning at one-over-par.

A grey sky backdrop for those fans braving the early rounds
07:25
Westwood out on the first

He drives a solid 229 and splits the fairway artistically.

Many of today's players getting off to solid starts, while each taking an appreciation of the weather changes.

The 45-year-old enters day two one-over-par, and finds the green with ease on his second as the ball drops dead behind the pin. Simple putt ahead.

07:24
Moore cautious on the first

Ryan Moore could only find the rough surrounding the green on the first.

He plays it cautious and trickles his second shot down towards the pin, using the natural gradient of the first hole.

It pays off as he putts from close range and gets off to a par start. Nice early confidence builder.

07:21
Grey skies

We have some glum scenes this morning as our first groups of players head out onto the course.

Few people expected we'd have umbrellas from the off today, but there we go.

We've already seen play hampered a little, particularly with Locke and Snedeker's approaches on the second.

Fans shelter from rain as they watch the action on the 2nd green during day two of The Open
07:16
Berger catches the birdie

And we have our first birdie of the day with Daniel Berger on the first, that takes him back to just one-over-par.

07:10
Cooke revives his second

The amateur recovers his shot from the rough to hone in on the hole. He goes two over par, while Cameron Davis gets into red figures at one-under.

Blixt off the tee to get his second round started
Sweden's Jonas Blixt tees off the 1st during day two of The Open Championship 2018
07:03
Davis inch perfect on the second

After parring the first, Cameron Davis is blazing a trail on the second.

His approach shot with the iron dead straight as the ball hones in on the pin. A simple up and down now awaits to finish this one off.

Rain is coming down considerably harder now at Carnoustie.

06:58
Locke pars the first

... but he's struggling on the second with his approach shot.

The amateur finds himself in the rough, overlooking the aggressively sloped green on the second hole.

06:54
Taking no chances

Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy are still wrapped up as they go through drills on the practice putting green.

The duo are out early, and are taking no risks with the drop in temperature we've had over night.

An injury in the warm-up doesn't even bear thinking about at this stage...

Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy are wrapped up as they go through drills on the practice green
06:52
SNAPPED

The snappers were on hand to capture amateur Sam Locke as he hit off from the tee.

As you can see, the sun-baked day we had yesterday has still left the surface a strange yellow/orange colour, but we have considerably damper conditions today.

Scotland's Sam Locke tees off the 1st during day two of The Open Championship 2018
06:44
Solid up and down for Locke

The youngster plays it well on his second shot, straight down the pipe to find the green with ease on this par four.

He's looking at a 7ft putt here and a solid start to round two.

06:37
And they're off

Snedeker is straight off the tee with a familiar iron shot. It's slightly wayward and finds the rough but he's not unhappy with it, the lie is generous.

Scottish amateur Sam Locke follows him, and he's found a nice lie.

Cameron Davis keeps things consistent, hitting long and straight on the 391 yard hole.

06:35
Stat attack

South African Zander Lombard was the only player who managed to avoid all 112 bunkers on the opening day of The Open.

It put him in good stead as a result, finishing with a solid four-under-par.

06:31
Almost time

We're expecting our first gentlemen onto the tee in little over five minutes time.

The rain is still spattering down at Carnoustie, meaning it's probably brolly weather from the off.

It shall be interesting to see how today's play contrasts from that of the opener...

This is how Sportsmail's Golf writer Derek Lawrenson digested a thrilling first day at The Open.

Take a look at the best of what day one at Carnoustie had to offer...

06:19

McIlroy is due to begin his second round at 7:52am alongside Marc Leishman and Thorbjorn Olesen.

The Northern Irishman is three shots behind early pace-setter Kevin Kisner after posting an opening-round 69 in Scotland.

Tiger Woods, who ended level par on day one, and playing partners Hideki Matsuyama and Russell Knox are due out at 10:20am, meanwhile.

Clubhouse leader Kisner, paired with Thomas Pieters and Marcus Kinhult, starts at the later time of 12:53pm.

Rory McIlroy shot a two-under-par round of 69 on day one of the open, and insists he will continue to go bold as we enter the second round.

Pulls, hooks - call them what you want, the Northern Irishman went through the whole repertoire of misplaced tee shots in his first round. Repeatedly he found himself wading through the rough stuff down the left of the fairways, waist deep at times, far beyond the ropes at others.

Sportsmail's Riath Al-Samarrai was able to grab a quick word with the man himself.

Weather watch

Well, we were promised a mix. And it looks like exactly what we're going to get.

The course was sun-baked on round one, with fairways rolling fast and presenting challenges left, right and centre.

We're going to have fleckings of rain from tee-off time through till about 3pm early afternoon.

May want to bear this in mind if your top tips are heading out later in the day's play.

05:55
Good morning, one and all

And welcome to day two of Sportsmail's coverage of The Open, bringing you all the action as it happens from Carnoustie.
