Laney High golfer Grace Holcomb was part of Team North Carolina East, who won the inaugural Linville Cup on Jan. 15 against Team Middle Atlantic.

In the championship match, Holcomb teamed with Kayla Dowell to win 2 UP through nine holes. That set up the East squad to earn a point on the final match.

To reach the championship, Team NC East topped the Southeast group 4-1. Holcomb and her partner won their match 3 and 2.

Held at Pine Needles/Mid Pines GC at Pinehurst, the first-ever event had 10-player teams who excelled on the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour in 2017 and thus chosen to represent their region. The Cup is named after Tour founder Robert Linville.

His one over par 35 on the back nine spelled the difference between himself and the co-runners-up.
