Wethington, Cole claim local title

Gadsden City, Westbrook Christian earn team wins at Gadsden Area golf tournament

Westbrook Christian’s Will Wethington and Glencoe’s Lauren Cole each won low medalist in the 2018 Gadsden Area golf tournament Monday at Twin Bridges Golf Club.

With over 60 players competing for the top spots, Wethington shot a par-71 to claim the individual award in the boys tournament, while Cole’s 77 won it on the girls' side.

The stretch of holes 8 through 11 was big for Wethington in helping him reach par.

“I hit mostly good shots and got a lot of good bounces,” Wethington said. “I was able to make a long putt on 10, so that got me going. Then I fell back to neutral after that.”

Cole said it was the best round she’s played this season.

“I was positive about today and I didn’t look down about anything,” Cole added.

Ellie Porter of Westbrook Christian finished runner-up on the girls side with a 79.

Etowah’s Alex Argo and Eli Antisdale each totaled a 76, but Argo ended up as the boys runner-up via a scorecard playoff.

Gadsden City won the boys team championship with a 321 while Westbrook’s 332 was good enough for runner-up.

Porter and the Warriors won the girls team crown with a 278. Gadsden City finished second with a 303.

With the playoffs nearing at the end of the month, Wethington will look to carry the momentum on from the area tournament.

“This will help me,” Wethington said. “It will give me confidence. I didn’t feel great out there, but I was able to score good. So hopefully I can build off that and move forward.”

Though Cole felt she played the best round of the season so far, she’s hoping she can continue to improve on it.

“It’s definitely going to push me harder because I know I can do better,” Cole said.
